Kitchen Porter to Chef de PartieAbdul’s Journey Through the Lantana Kitchen

Real Career Progress. Real Lantana People. Meet Abdul.
When Abdul joined Lantana at 19 as a kitchen porter, he was stepping into his very first job. Fast forward two years, and he’s a chef de partie with a love of cooking, a passion for learning, and a team he’s grown up with.
His story is one of many across Lantana’s restaurants; reminders that hospitality isn’t just about food, it’s about people, and the potential that lives in every shift, every plate, every day.
Why did you choose to work in hospitality?
“I chose hospitality as my first ever job because I’ve always been drawn to the world of food. Not just the cooking, but the people, the smiles you put on their faces, the culture, and the energy that goes with it.”
“The Australian food scene, in particular, really captured my interest, and that’s what made Lantana the perfect place to begin this journey.”
“One of the biggest reasons I’ve stayed and grown in this industry is because I genuinely love what I do. I discovered a real passion for cooking and constantly learning more about food. I could see myself building a future here, and that belief has kept me motivated every single day.”
What has this journey meant to you?
“The journey so far has been incredible. I’ve learned so much, and I’ve been lucky to be surrounded by a very supportive team who’ve played a huge role in my progress.”
“Their encouragement and belief in me have made a real difference. This job has truly changed my life, and I’m just getting started. The future is bright.”
What’s your favourite dish at Lantana?
“It’s definitely the Brisket Hash. The combination of flavours and ingredients is what really makes the dish perfect for me. I really love it.”
People Make Lantana
Abdul’s growth isn’t a one-off, it’s part of a much wider story.
At Lantana, over 60% of our internal promotions last year came from within our own team. That includes baristas who’ve become head trainers, chefs like Abdul who’ve stepped into leadership, and KPs who’ve found a passion they didn’t expect.
We became a certified B Corp in 2024, but long before that, we believed in doing business differently. That means making decisions that are better for people, not just profits.
From offering access to mental health support to providing paid training hours, and carbon-free delivery for our catering, we’re working to build a version of hospitality that feels good from the inside out.
And it starts with the people in our kitchens, on our floors, and at our coffee machines every day.

Abdul’s story is just one path but it shows what’s possible when the culture is kind, the learning is real, and the Lantana team has your back.
